The UK Told About the Exploitation of Ukrainian Refugees in Exchange for Housing

Some Ukrainian refugees are exploited in Britain, forcing them to work for free in exchange for housing. British landlords, after offering Ukrainians housing under the “Homes for Ukraine” program, are driving them into credit bondage, INews reported Feb. 24, citing a new report from the Red Cross.

“In some cases, landlords have paid for travel or accommodation for Ukrainians arriving in Britain before demanding that refugees earn a living in return, such as domestic work or work in a family business,” the paper said.

There have also been cases where the British have promised work to newcomers, but then it turns out that this work involves exploitative labor on farms or at home. At the same time, children are also encouraged to work instead of going to school.
The article also noted that in most cases the hosts were generous to the newcomers and such cases are rare rather than systemic.

“The risks of exploitation among people displaced from Ukraine to Britain should be monitored and urgently addressed,” the Red Cross report said.
