Opera Singer Placido Domingo Accused of Harassment Again

Reuters: Spanish singer Placido Domingo faces new allegations of harassment

Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo has faced new allegations of sexual harassment, Reuters has reported.

The accusations against Domingo were made by an unnamed singer on Spanish TV channel La Sexta, it said. She appeared as a dark figure and said that in the 2000s Domingo allegedly asked to touch her at a theatre in Spain and at another time tried to kiss her.

The singer said she had not addressed her supervisors or authorities. “He is Domingo. He is untouchable,” she said.

Representatives for the singer did not respond to a request for comment.

The scandal surrounding Domingo erupted in August 2019. Nine women accused the famous opera singer of sexual harassment. They claimed Domingo had behaved inappropriately in dressing rooms for 30 years, molesting and trying to kiss. Later, 11 women made similar accusations. Domingo has denied all of them. Many European theatres have turned down his performances.

Placido Domingo has resigned as general director of the Los Angeles Opera, where he worked for over 20 years due to the scandal. The Los Angeles Opera has announced its own investigation involving independent experts.

Domingo’s repertoire for more than half a century on stage around the world includes some 150 operatic roles – more than anyone else’s. He has appeared around 4,000 times as a singer, appearing at the world’s leading opera houses, from La Scala in Milan to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. His repertoire includes works in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English and Russian. The singer is also a multiple Grammy award winner.
