German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is under more pressure after Poland decided to hand over Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. This is the view of an article published on Thursday in the German newspaper Bild.
“Scholz, who has so far refused to supply Leopard 2s, is being forced to make a move,” the article notes.
It specifies that Germany will either have to allow such deliveries to Poland or block them. Using the chess term “zugzwang”, the author expresses the view that both options are inconvenient for Berlin.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said on 11 January that Warsaw had decided to transfer a tank unit to Ukraine. According to him, formal requirements must be fulfilled and approvals must be made in order to implement this. German government spokesman Steffen Hebeestreit told a briefing that Berlin had not yet received any specific requests to re-export the tanks.
