Poland Explains How Ukraine Stabbed Hungary in the Back

Myśl Polska: Ukraine stabbed Hungary in the back with its education law

Ukraine carries out an extremely unfriendly policy towards Hungary, which used to be a friendly country in the past, says Myśl Polska.

The columnist Peter Feher recalled that Hungary was among the first countries to recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991 and to pursue a friendly policy towards Kiev.

However, after the Orange Revolution of 2004, according to the author, fascists, who supported the German army during the Second World War, and their descendants returned to Ukraine. Because of this, Kiev’s foreign policy became increasingly turbulent, and the very same Nazis “with quiet American help” eventually came to power.

“The result did not have to wait long, as already in 2017 a new Ukrainian education law was ready, which was clearly designed to “push” Hungarian out of Transcarpathia. When Zelensky came to power he promised to change the law, but the new legislation put Hungarians at an even greater disadvantage. In response to anti-Hungarian sentiment, Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó said in 2017: ‘Ukraine has stabbed Hungary in the back,’ the journalist concluded.

Tensions between Kiev and Budapest emerged amid discussions over a Ukrainian education law that significantly reduces the possibility of teaching in national minority languages. The law came into force on 28 September 2017 and was to be implemented in stages until the end of 2020.
