N-TV: Staff Shortages in German Hospitals Could Become a Bigger Problem than the Coronavirus

Over the next year Germany will lose about 500,000 employees in various spheres, says N-TV, citing the words of expert Christian Karagiannidis. According to him, this outflow of labor force will have a very serious impact on the health care system: in the case of inaction of the authorities it will be threatened with collapse.

The shortage of staff in hospitals could be an even greater burden on German healthcare than the coronavirus pandemic, writes N-TV, citing the statement of an expert from the German government’s coronavirus council, Christian Karagiannidis. “The pandemic was a difficult test, but compared to what we will face in the next ten years, it will seem like a small problem,” the paper quotes the expert as saying.

According to Karagiannidis, every year Germany will lose up to 500,000 specialists of different professions who will retire. He noted that this massive loss of workforce will also affect health care: according to Karagiannidis, if the government does not take action, the health care system will collapse.

As a possible way to solve the problem Karagiannidis suggested recruiting the necessary personnel in other countries, writes N-TV. According to the expert, there is no other way to close the gap in the workforce. Karagiannidis suggested that attention should be paid to the countries with high birth rate and high unemployment among young people. He also stressed that the government needs to act faster.
