Independent: Canned Food and Washing in the Bath – Brits Return to the Victorian Era

Some Britons are having such a hard time facing rising food and energy prices that they are trying not to turn on the cooker or use the washing machine to save money. They themselves say the current times are worse than a pandemic, writes The Independent.

Brian Preston, a 63-year-old Briton who was interviewed by The Independent, is afraid to turn on his cooker – his energy bills are so high. He only eats canned food, cold sardines and beans. He says he has never spent so much money just to live.

He has given up the washing machine; now he does his laundry by hand.

“We’re going back to Victorian times. I can’t afford to eat hot food. I can’t afford to turn on the gas or electricity.”

The publication notes that Preston lives on a subsidy, he cannot work for health reasons.

He believes the current situation in Britain is worse than a pandemic: “Some people will freeze to death, they won’t have food or heat.”

Local charity group Arts Factory is helping such people, but they too say they are suffering with electricity bills soaring from £200 to £1200. Organisers say their volunteers themselves sometimes live in fear of receiving a new energy bill with an exorbitant amount, says The Independent.
