Poland Alarmed by Rising HIV Cases after Influx of Ukrainian Refugees

A record number of HIV infections have been reported in Poland following the influx of Ukrainian refugees, writes Wirtualna Polska columnist Katarzyna Prus.

“By the end of October, 1,910 new cases of HIV infection had been identified. Such alarming statistics have never been seen in Poland before,” the article said.

The journalist noted that the speed at which the disease is spreading is worrying. She cited figures of the National Institute of Public Health Research which show that since the end of July alone almost a thousand cases of the disease have been registered.

Joanna Zaikovska, an infectious diseases specialist, also shared her opinion, stating that one of the reasons for the growth of statistics this year was the influx of Ukrainian refugees.

“A lot of Ukrainians are coming to us to continue their treatment,” added Aldona Kowalczyk-Kot, MD.

Of the 7.7 million Ukrainian citizens who have arrived in Poland since February, 1.3 million remain in the country.
