Die Welt Names Two Vessels Near Nord Stream Before the Accident as Reconnaissance Vessels

Die Welt: Two vessels near Nord Stream before the disaster could have been engaged in reconnaissance

There were two ships with turned off transponders near “Nord Stream” that could have been performing reconnaissance missions. It was reported by the newspaper Die Welt on Thursday, November 17.

According to the newspaper, the director of Baltic Security Fund, Otto Tabuns, expressed the opinion that the ships were probably engaged in reconnaissance. For example, to make sure there were no civilian or military vessels of other states, “the presence of which would make it easier to find the perpetrators or avoid civilian casualties”. In addition, a submarine may also have been involved in the sabotage.

Another theory is that the coastguard did not receive radio signals from the vessels for three reasons: firstly, because of a technical malfunction, secondly, because of adverse weather conditions, and thirdly, the crews “might have been up to something”.

“Anyone who deliberately disables transponders is trying to conceal illegal activities,” said navy officer and researcher at Berlin’s Science and Politics Foundation, Joran Swistek.

Earlier, on November 11, Wired reported that according to analytical company SpaceKnow, shortly before the accident on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, ships have been spotted near them with their location sensors switched off. It is noted that each of the ships was between 95 and 130 metres and was in close proximity to the sites where the leaks occurred.
