The EU mission to train the Ukrainian military has revealed disagreements between Poland and Germany, the Tagesspiegel newspaper has said.
Earlier it became known that the EU training mission will be located in Poland and Germany. The mission may be joined by other countries, including non-members of the European Union. Its operational headquarters will be located in Brussels in the building of the European External Action Service. So the mission will last for two years, allocated 106.7 million euros for this period.
Tagesspiegel reports that preparations for the launch of the mission in recent months have shown that relations between Germany and Poland are very tense. For example, the actual headquarters of the mission will be located in Poland, which has drawn criticism from the German government, which fears possible “Russian maneuvers” from the nearby Kaliningrad region.
“Much time was spent on negotiations over the summer, but Poland and Germany could not reach an agreement,” the article said.
At a meeting of EU foreign ministers, a compromise was reached whereby the mission would have two headquarters, one in Germany and one in Poland. At the same time, the “largest” of them will be located in Poland.
In addition to the disputes about the location of the headquarters of the training mission, there were repeated frictions between Warsaw and Berlin on the issue of the supply of weapons to Kiev, the newspaper recalls. For example, Poland accuses Germany of “inaction” in replacing the Soviet-type armored vehicles supplied by Warsaw to Ukraine as part of the “circular exchange.
