The Death Toll From Crush in Seoul Rises to 151

The death toll from a crush in South Korea’s capital of Seoul has risen to 151, with 82 people injured. The Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, October 30.

It is noted that 19 people are in critical condition.

Yonhap also reported that at least 19 foreigners were victims of the stampede. It is specified that they are citizens of Iran, China, Norway and Uzbekistan.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that 149 people died and more than 150 were injured. It was also reported that two foreigners died in the crush. It is currently unknown whether there were any Russian citizens in the crowd. The Russian embassy in Seoul is in the process of checking this information with local authorities.

Seoul authorities also received about 270 reports of missing people.

The tragedy in Seoul’s Itaewon area, where Halloween festivities were held, occurred Saturday evening, October 29, due to stampede. Police estimated that there were about 100,000 people in the celebration area at the time of the tragedy.

During the crush in Seoul, people tried to escape to nearby establishments, but they were not allowed in.

According to one of the rescuers, the cause of death for most people was asphyxiation. The dead were mostly women between the ages of 18 and 30.According to YTN, the appearance of a celebrity in a popular Itaewon neighborhood of bars and discos may be one likely cause of the stampede.

Donga reported that South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol declared national mourning over the mass crush in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood. He visited the scene of the tragedy immediately after addressing the public.
