Guardian: More Than Half of Britons Dissatisfied With Truss’ Work

Liz Truss’s approval rating as prime minister of Great Britain has fallen below that of Boris Johnson on the eve of her resignation, writes The Guardian with reference to a poll by Opinium. Only 18% of Britons approve of her work and 55% disapprove. According to experts, in addition to the drop in her personal rating, Truss also “contributed to the fact that the Conservative government as a whole almost overnight lost its political credibility and reputation for economic competence.”

According to a new Opinium poll, Liz Truss’ approval rating as British prime minister has fallen below that of Boris Johnson on the eve of her resignation. The poll was conducted among 2,000 people from 28 to 30 September, writes The Guardian.

Within a week Truss’s net approval rating fell from -9 to -37 – the voters negatively assessed her new measures in the field of budgetary policy. According to the latest poll, only 18% of Britons approve of her performance as prime minister, while 55% disapprove.

Truss’ net approval rating is lower than that of Boris Johnson on the eve of his resignation as British prime minister and leader of the Conservatives. Truss’ result is only slightly higher than Johnson’s historical worst score of -42, recorded at the height of the “partigate” scandal.

In just one month since Truss took over as prime minister, Labor’s lead over Tory has increased from 5 percentage points to 19. Tory popularity has fallen to 27% and Labor’s has increased to 46%.

By contrast, Labor Party leader Keir Starmer’s approval rating increased significantly. His net approval rating is now +9, up from -4 last week. On the question of who voters think is the most suitable prime minister, Starmer is also ahead of Truss by 17 percentage points.

Starmer’s advantage over Truss far exceeds the largest advantage he has ever had over Johnson. Nearly half (48%) of Conservative voters in 2019 would rather see Johnson than Truss as Prime Minister. Only 19% would choose Truss.

An overwhelming majority of voters (75%) said they believe the government has lost control of the country’s economic situation. Only 18% held the opposite position. Meanwhile, 71% of those who voted Conservative in 2019 suggest that the government has lost control. Nearly half (48%) of the public wants Truss to resign.

Opinium’s head of policy and public relations James Crouch notes: “Liz Truss managed to achieve the worst performance of both Theresa May and Boris Johnson on the eve of their tenure within just weeks of taking office and days after her government’s first move.” In addition to the drop in her personal ratings, he said, Truss also “contributed to the Conservative government as a whole losing its political credibility and reputation for economic competence almost overnight,” The Guardian reported.
