The British Furious upon Being Told of Food and Heating Costs in Russia

In an attempt to undermine Russia’s economy, Britain itself is experiencing a serious crisis, with soaring food and energy prices. Whereas in Russia, prices are mostly falling, reports the British tabloid The Sun.

While the British are coping with a cost-of-living crisis, Russians are “stuffing their shopping trolleys full of food” at half the price, the paper says.

” Britain’s food prices rose in August at the fastest rate since the economic crisis in 2008, jumping 10.5% on the previous year. Food inflation accelerated to 9.3% in July as the crisis in Ukraine and subsequent price rises for animal feed, fertiliser, wheat and vegetable oils put increasing pressure on prices,” said author Will Stewart.

However, the journalist added, in Moscow, food prices have fallen by at least 11% since the beginning of 2022.

“The price of cabbage on shop shelves has fallen by 40% in 25 regions and by 33% nationwide. Potatoes became 28% cheaper, beetroot 27%, grapes 16%, bananas 14%, tomatoes 14%, carrots 13%, pears 11% and apples 6%,” Stewart calculated.

Utilities and fuel remain another critical cost for UK residents. Due to rising gas and oil prices, a litre of petrol cost £1.91 in the UK by June, and electricity bills “skyrocketed”.

“The average monthly increase in electricity prices in Russia was 10%, while in the UK electricity bills are expected to rise by 80%,” the journalist said.

Following the start of Russia’s special operation to demilitarise and denazify Ukraine, the West has intensified sanctions pressure on Moscow. Many countries announced freezing of Russian assets and began to consider ways to cut energy supplies from Russia. These measures have caused problems for Europe and the U.S., with rising food and fuel prices.
