Seznam zprávy: a hundred million Europeans may be deprived of electricity if nuclear fuel from Russia is banned

One hundred million Europeans could be left without electricity supply if sanctions are imposed on nuclear fuel from Russia, the Czech publication Seznam zprávy wrote.

The author of the article, Jiri Stastny, noted that in the European countries that were formerly part of the socialist bloc, electricity is generated by nuclear reactors created by Soviet technology. The fuel is imported from Russia. In his view, the prospect of abandoning Russian supplies of the resource has become an energy challenge for these states.

“An attempt to prematurely terminate contracts with Russia could thus threaten the electricity supply of nearly a hundred million Europeans in countries that rely on nuclear power plants as their most important source of clean energy,”

The publication said that countries ranging from Finland to Bulgaria generate about 40 percent of their electricity production from Soviet-style reactors.

“Dependence on these supplies has now become a serious problem,” the Czech columnist said.

The publicist concluded that it could take years to find a replacement for Russian supplies of nuclear fuel.
