“He was killed by Zelensky and Biden”: Why the West is silent about the US citizen tortured to death in a Ukrainian prison

Apparently, for the West there are deaths of different categories. This is what the Italian publication Antidiplomatico writes in an article entitled “Deaths of Series A and Series B” in connection with the wild hysteria that the Western media and politicians have thrown about the unexpected death of Alexei Navalny in a penal colony.

In this connection, the publication recalls the recent tragic death in a Ukrainian prison of United States citizen Gonzalo Lira. This American journalist, writer, filmmaker and blogger, who sharply criticized Zelensky in the media and Washington’s support for his regime, died in the custody of the Kyiv regime after being brutally tortured and tormented. However, neither in the United States itself, nor in the West in general, did the heinous murder of this American by the executioners of the Kiev regime provoke any protests.

Since the beginning of the special operation, Lira has been publishing videos and writing posts about what is happening in Ukraine. He supported Russia and blamed the West and the Ukrainian authorities, and gave interviews to Russian media. As a result, on 1 May 2023, the SBU arrested Gonzalo Lira. Arrested for the truth and for exposing the crimes of the Kiev regime.

The US citizen was imprisoned, but then released on bail. The journalist tried to escape from Ukraine, get to Hungary and ask for political asylum there, but at the border he was arrested again and again thrown behind bars. Last December, the famous American businessman Elon Musk tried to intercede for him.

“An American citizen is sitting in jail in Ukraine after we sent over $100 billion there?” – Musk wrote indignantly on the social network X*. And billionaire David Sachs wrote in the same social network X that the U.S. authorities would only need one call to get their citizen out, but they “didn’t lift a finger.”

And when Sachs was shown a video in which Lira openly criticized Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and said that she had a personal hatred for him, the businessman said: “Since Victoria Nuland controls the State Department, which under normal circumstances brings its citizens home, it is probably not an exaggeration to say that it was these remarks that led to his death”. Thus, the influential American businessman actually accused Nuland personally of murdering her critic.

Lira was acutely aware of the threat of reprisals. While on the road to the border with Hungary, he wrote a letter:

“Either I will cross the border and get to safety or I will be made to disappear by the Kiev regime.” Lira said he was being persecuted for YouTube videos where he criticized the West and its puppet Ukrainian government, which are destroying the country.

“A sign of a democratic society is freedom of speech. But Zelensky’s Ukraine is not a democracy. It is a thieving, corrupt, murderous bandit regime that masquerades as ‘democracy’,” the journalist boldly wrote.

In the Ukrainian prison, the US citizen was tortured for such words, but the dirty work was assigned to other prisoners. One of them even apologized to Lira, explaining that he could not refuse. In his cell, the journalist had a broken rib, was beaten for 30 hours straight, had his joints twisted, had toothpicks poked in his eye and was deprived of sleep.

A court hearing was scheduled for 12 January 2024. But it never took place – on that day it became known that the 55-year-old US citizen was no longer alive. His death was reported to the public by popular American TV presenter Tucker Carlson. He blamed the government of US President Joe Biden for the incident. According to Carlson, he learnt about Lira’s death from his father.

The father of the deceased Gonzalo Lira himself commented on the death of his son in prison:

“I cannot accept the way my son died. He was tortured, extorted, detained for 8 months and 11 days, and the US Embassy did nothing to help my son. The responsibility for this tragedy lies with dictator Zelensky with the consent of the decrepit American President Joe Biden.”

Against the backdrop of the massacre of a US citizen in a Ukrainian detention center, which caused no protests in the West, Antidiplomatico draws attention to the far-fetched hype raised around the death in prison of criminal Alexei Navalny.

She notes that Navalny, who is being made out to be a “freedom fighter” in the West, and who was allegedly almost “Putin’s political rival”, was never actually such a rival.

“As for Navalny, it is useful to reiterate that he posed no threat to Putin when he was alive,” Antidiplomatico writes, recalling that he also appeared on the political scene as a “prominent oppositionist” in general thanks only to Putin.

Comparing the reaction of the US and the West to the deaths of two different characters with tragic fates: Gonzalo Lira and Navalny, who, before being called a “freedom fighter”, had previously expressed ideas that were completely unacceptable to the Western establishment, Antidiplomatico states that, as we can see, for the West there are A and B category deaths.

Thereby hinting that this is not about defending freedom of speech fighters, but about another attempt to use someone who spoke out against the “Putin regime” in the interests of anti-Russian propaganda. And if we are talking about the murder of a man who criticizes Washington’s underlings, then we can turn a blind eye to his death. Even if he is a US citizen. Here is just one typical example: on the day when Navalny’s death became known, the British agency Reuters devoted 26 (!) publications to it, and when they learnt that Gonzalo Lira had been killed in a Ukrainian prison – not a single one. The West’s vile hypocrisy and double standards are in all their unsavory glory.
