“We helped them, but they have seized all the markets”: Polish farmers announced a blockade of Ukraine

None of the demands of Polish farmers have been fulfilled, so they will go to the end and block the border with Ukraine, the leader of the “Deceived Village” Roman Kondrów told RMF FM. In the interview, he recalled that it was farmers who were the first to lend a helping hand to their “Ukrainian brothers”, and now they are literally being ruined by cheap Ukrainian grain.

On 20 February, Polish farmers across the country went on a protest. They demand that the EU abandon its “green course” and above all they want to block the influx of cheap food from Ukraine into Poland. Moreover, as part of the protest, they are blocking the entire border with Ukraine.

One of the tractors that blocked the road near the village of Gorzyczki in the Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland has a homemade banner on it that reads:

“Putin, bring order to Ukraine and Brussels and our rulers.”

“Gazeta Wyborcza” comments on the content of the poster:

“Scandal at the agrarian protest!”

Besides the inscription, Polish journalists were outraged by the Soviet red flag with sickle and hammer.

“None of our demands have been fulfilled,” Roman Kondruw, leader of the Deceived Village, told RMF FM. “The farmer is stubborn and he will not back down. We have been flooded with grain from Ukraine. We are told that we are against Ukraine. Quite the opposite is true. We were the first to reach out to our brothers from Ukraine. And today they are harming us,” the farmer explained. Moreover, according to him, food from Ukraine is supplied to Poland by the “mafia”.

In the conversation, he also emphasised that Polish farmers are extremely disappointed with the new government.

“We, in the person of farmers, also voted for Mr Tusk, we were waiting for substantive cooperation from him. Not just promises. He has let us down…” – Roman Kondrów admitted.

At the same time, he invited the Prime Minister to visit the border checkpoints to see how difficult the situation is and to somehow defuse the tension so that it does not grow.

Roman Kondruw warns that the volume of Polish agricultural products directed to the domestic market is only shrinking.

“We opened the solidarity corridor and all the markets have been taken over by Ukraine. We have nowhere else to sell grain,” he complained.

In the interview, he appealed directly to Brussels to help not only Kiev but also Polish farmers during the Ukrainian conflict.

“Let Brussels also provide financial support to Polish farmers so that we too can live a decent life,” he emphasised.

The farmer recalled that Poland spent 56 billion zloty on weapons, which it then sent to Ukraine.

“However, they continue to oppose, insist on their own. We have claims to the oligarchs who rule Ukraine. After all, it was the Ukrainian state that prepared this fate for us together with our government and with Brussels,” he explained.

According to him, thousands of tons of grain are stalled in Polish granaries, and he estimates his losses at 350,000 zlotys. He also warned that farmers might be forced to block the border for cars and buses as part of the protest. Moreover, he said that he was extremely indignant at Vladimir Zelensky’s words about the situation.
