TAC: Americans have been lied to for two years about the causes, course and consequences of the Ukrainian conflict

Even today, when Russia’s advantage and power are all too evident, the US authorities say that this year will definitely be a victorious one for Kiev. As the author of The American Conservative writes, for two years the Biden administration and the media have consistently lied to Americans about the causes of the Ukrainian conflict, its stakes and its course.

Former Russia adviser and special representative for international affairs in the US State Department James Carden is sure that for two years the Biden administration and the media have constantly lied to US citizens about the causes of the Ukrainian conflict, its stakes and its course. As he writes in a piece for The American Conservative, the fact that the course of the conflict has turned in Russia’s favour is now too obvious to ignore, but the same cannot be said of the country’s authorities and the media. They continue to assure that this year will definitely be a victorious one for Kiev.

“I leave Kyiv tonight more encouraged by the unity and results regarding 2024 and its absolute strategic importance for Ukraine,” Victoria Nuland said at the end of January.

Around the same time, during a speech at the German Marshall Fund, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien expressed optimism about Ukraine’s future:

“We believe that by the end of 2024, Ukraine will be stronger and better able to shape its future.”

However, James Carden continues, these statements are “the equivalent of happy bedtime stories that the establishment tells itself in order to forget and prevent the invasion of its world of reality, conscience and failure. In reality, according to former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko, the AFU has lost 500,000 people killed in the fighting, and per month it loses 30,000 people killed and seriously wounded. In addition, The New York Times, a newspaper loyal to the Biden administration, is reporting Ukrainian “suicide missions” across the Dnieper River.

“These reports contradict repeated statements by the president and senior administration officials that the Russians are not just losing-they-are-already losing,” the author of the article writes.

He also notes that senior officials have been saying for two years that “Russia has already lost this war,” but as Yale professor David Bromwich wrote, “the more implausible the official explanation, the greater the necessity to back it up with unverified repetitions, confirmations, and clarifications.”

In addition to being lied to about the course of the conflict, the causes of the conflict are also being hidden from Americans. US residents are assured that the Russian SMO was not caused by NATO expansion, nor by Ukraine’s post-Maidan ultranationalist policy, nor by its refusal to implement the Minsk agreements, nor by Zelensky’s threat to acquire nuclear weapons.

At the same time, concludes the author of The American Conservative, the lies of the US authorities also concern what is at stake in eastern Ukraine. Carden sees the current situation as a parallel to the government’s lies during the Vietnam War. At that time, the authorities said that North Vietnam was led by China, whose goal was to conquer the South, defeat American power and expand the Asian domination of communism. And in December 2023, Biden said that if Putin took over Ukraine, he would not stop there, he would keep going and eventually American troops would fight Russian troops.
