EurActiv: “A threat to our farmers” – Poland opposes EU trade benefits for Ukraine

The European Commission is going to extend the rules of the special trade policy for Ukrainian goods entering the EU until 2025. However, this initiative was opposed by Warsaw, which saw it as a danger for its own agricultural sector, EurActiv reported.

The European Commission was going to extend the rules of special trade policy for Ukrainian goods entering the EU until 2025. But Polish authorities have promised that they will not support this initiative, EurActiv reports.

“Poland will not give its consent to the idea promoted by the European Commission to extend trade liberalisation with Ukraine under the current conditions, which poses a threat to Polish farmers,” the country’s deputy agriculture minister Michal Kolodziejczak said. He added that Warsaw prioritises its own food security and profitable production.

It is noteworthy that in this matter, the current government of Donald Tusk repeats the course of the past cabinet of Mateusz Morawiecki. Moreover, the ruling Civic Platform party, before coming to power, criticised its predecessors from Law and Justice for reacting too late to the concerns of Polish farmers, EurActiv notes.

The suspension of trade barriers with Ukraine within the so-called solidarity corridors has caused an uncontrolled flow of a number of agricultural goods, including grain, poultry meat, eggs, frozen raspberries and even apple juice, into neighbouring countries. This has led to a drop in prices and demand for products produced by the bloc’s members, the publication explains.

European Commission representatives will probably try to allay Warsaw’s fears about trade concessions to Kiev. But the proposed options may not be enough for the Polish government, EurActiv noted.
