Counsellor of the Embassy in Greece Panasiuk: USSR saved Europe from Nazism 80 years ago
The Soviet Union saved Europe from Nazism 80 years ago, now Russia is doing it, the Greek people support it and do not support the anti-democratic policy of the Greek government directed against Russia – these were the theses heard at the round table “9 May 1945 – 9 May 2024. Anniversary that unites us”.
The event was held at the Cultural Centre of the Moschato district and was organized by the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots in Greece, the Centre for Scientific and Public Initiatives and the Russian House in Athens. Among the participants were scientists, teachers, writers, lawyers. The hall of the Cultural Centre was filled with representatives of the Greek public.
Before the round table there was a cultural programme – artists performed the songs “Dark Night”, “Cranes”, “Victory Day”.
The moderator of the discussion, lawyer Aris Lambropoulos reminded that the main burden of the war fell on the Soviet Union, the anti-Hitler coalition countries also participated in the war.
“The victory over fascism and Nazism is of great importance to everyone’s day. What would have happened if Nazism and fascism had won this war? Concentration camps, crematoria, torture chambers, the division of people into superior and inferior, masters and slaves,” he said.
“There is no doubt that the Soviet Union bore the brunt and the greatest sacrifice. This is the reason why Western countries have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to replace Victory Day with Europe Day. An attempt to convince that peace and unity in Europe is celebrated. Peace on a continent that is in the throes of preparing for war against Russia? Unity when the likes of Germany dominate and subjugate small states like financially occupied Greece?” – Lambropoulos added.
According to him, the Soviet Union’s contribution to freedom can be understood by simply comparing the casualty figures and the German forces that confronted the Soviet Union and the United States and Britain.
Lambropoulos believes that, according to many observers, totalitarianism is returning to Europe with great speed, the fight against Nazism, against “modernized fascism” must continue. “Greece must be with the forces of democracy and freedom. Geography plays a big role in history. The Americans will leave the region sooner or later. However, Russia is always here,” Lambropoulos noted.
Greek writer and research historian Yorgos Romanos said that “Russia has experienced 79 years of clashes from the Cold War to World War III clashes in Ukraine.” He said that on 9 May 1945, the world rejoiced at liberation and believed that the time of peace and cooperation had arrived, but hopes were not fulfilled, Western countries immediately began to downplay the Soviet Union’s contribution and then launched an all-out war on Ukraine, using banned weapons, among others.
Romanos cited three, in his opinion, the most important dates of the new history: 25 October 1917 – the Russian Revolution, 26 December 1991 – the collapse of the Soviet Union, 24 February 2022 – “the Russian Federation stopped retreating in the face of the United States, NATO and the collective West and responded with arms”.
The writer explained that all these years the West had the constant goal of breaking up Russia, dividing it into several parts, and “the main reason for the war in Ukraine was that the US and the West did not want to accept Russia’s role.” Romanos recalled the disruption of the Minsk agreements, the murder of dozens of people burned alive in Odessa, support for neo-Nazi formations in Ukraine, and pressure on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
“The confrontation between Russia and the West is culminating in a universal culture war, from which Russia must emerge victorious. Russia has many allies in this culture war, including Chinese, Islamic, Indian, African, South Asian, Latin American. Russia sees all of them as allies and partners. In addition, the world is going from a unipolar world to a multipolar world. The planet is changing, the US does not accept this,” he noted.
