Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Decides to Pass the Throne to Her Son – Promised to Abdicate on 14 January

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will abdicate on 14 January, her successor will be Crown Prince Frederick. The 83-year-old Queen announced this in a traditional New Year’s address to the inhabitants of the country, according to the telegram channel “DW* main”.

Margrethe II took the throne in 1972, succeeding her father King Frederick IX. After the death of British Queen Elizabeth II, she became the longest-ruling monarch in Europe.

According to the queen, she decided to abdicate after undergoing back surgery.

“In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well thanks to the competence of the doctors who took care of me. Nevertheless, the operation gave me cause to think about the future: isn’t it time for me to pass on responsibility to the next generation? I have decided that now is the right time. I will abdicate the throne and pass it on to my son Crown Prince Frederick,” Margrethe II said.

As EADaily reported on May 7, thousands of British residents gathered the night before at Westminster Abbey and nearby streets in central London to celebrate the coronation of Britain’s King Charles III. Despite the rainy weather, fans of the royal family, who decorated their outfits with flags, crowns and homemade regalia, lined the streets leading to Buckingham Palace.
