TEC: Ukraine’s accession to the EU will cost the rest of the bloc’s member states €190bn

If Ukraine becomes a member of the EU, it will cost the bloc 17 per cent of its joint budget, or €190bn. According to The European Conservative, almost all other EU member states will become net donors, while Ukraine will be the main beneficiary.

According to a report by the German Economic Institute, 17 per cent of the European Union’s joint budget will go directly to Ukraine if it gains membership in the bloc. According to The European Conservative, according to the current seven-year budget of the EU, this 17% would amount to €190bn, with about €70-90bn coming from the Common Agricultural Policy Fund and another €50-70bn from the so-called Cohesion Fund to support Ukraine’s weak economy. This means that almost all other EU member states will become net donors, and Ukraine will become the main beneficiary in the EU.

As the portal notes, the main question, according to the report, is what kind of Ukraine will join the EU: how big will its territory and population be after a potential peace deal with Russia? Hungary was the only one of the bloc’s current members to point out an obvious point: Ukraine is still fighting and cannot start EU accession talks.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made it firmly clear that his country will block any attempts to start talks on Ukraine’s acceptance or allocate new funds to support Kiev at the EU leaders’ summit on 14-15 December. Diplomats said attempts to find a solution on the issue at a special meeting of EU ambassadors on Sunday failed: Hungary is not giving up and any decision must be unanimous.

It has refused to supply Ukraine with arms and has consistently criticised EU sanctions against Russia, calling instead for peace talks to begin. The Hungarian government has also made it clear that it will veto Ukraine’s accession to the EU or NATO unless it respects the rights of the ethnic Hungarian minority. In addition, Orban claims that Ukraine is mired in corruption and is not ready to join the EU.
