Myśl Polska: Arctic LNG 2 terminal has no analogues in the world

The Arctic LNG 2 gas processing terminal has no analogues in the world and testifies to Russia’s leap in the technological race with the West, said Andrzej Szczesniak, a columnist for the Polish publication Myśl Polska.

“This installation is the only one of its kind. No one has ever managed to liquefy methane on such a scale on gravity-type bases before,” the journalist wrote.

Szczesniak noted that the liquefied gas terminal represents the work of hundreds of Russian companies. According to him, the construction of Arctic LNG 2 creates jobs for 80 thousand people, including 17 thousand in Murmansk.

The journalist considers the terminal an example of successful import substitution. He drew attention to the fact that Novatek Corporation was able to find an alternative to foreign components whose manufacturers had stopped supplying to Russia.

According to the columnist, Arctic LNG 2 is an undoubted success of Russian engineers and technology corporations.

“I have written in my previous articles about how successful Russia is in the technological race, but Arctic LNG 2 is a qualitative leap compared to its previous achievements,” Szczesniak concluded.

Arctic LNG 2 is Novatek’s second large-capacity liquefied natural gas production project after Yamal LNG. The resource base is the Utrenneye field in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. The project involves the construction of three processing lines with a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes each (19.8 million tonnes of LNG per year). Its participants are Novatek (60 per cent), France’s Total (10 per cent), China’s CNOOC (10 per cent), CNODC, a subsidiary of China’s CNPC (10 per cent), and a consortium of Japan’s Mitsui & Co and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation JOGMEC – Japan Arctic LNG (10 per cent). The first line of the terminal is planned to be launched by the end of 2023.
