Media: Europe may miss potatoes for Christmas

The European countries, which are reeling from trade ties with Belarus and Russia, will face record prices for potatoes by Christmas, as well as a shortage of this product. Bloomberg reports on what is happening in the EU.

The yield forecast in Europe was already low in the last season, but the situation in the EU has become even worse due to prolonged heavy rains. According to food market experts, the cost of potatoes in European countries has already reached the highest level in the last 14 years.

Problems with growing and harvesting potatoes have been reported by farmers in Belgium, France and the UK, whose machinery has been unable to cope with the bad weather that has broken out.

“In fact, it has been raining on and off,” confirmed a spokesman for a major produce supplier.

The bad weather, the source clarifies, has also had a negative impact on the sugar beet harvest in France and delayed the sowing of winter cereals in the country. In other words, we should expect prices to rise for these categories of products as well.
