Nya Dagbladet: In Sweden, citizens’ fear of crime has reached a record level

The majority of Swedish residents are concerned about the unprecedented increase in crime in the country, the Nya Dagbladet newspaper reports with reference to the data of the latest survey conducted by the National Council for Crime Prevention. At the same time, over the past year there has been a decline in the confidence of the population of the Scandinavian kingdom in relation to the police.

According to the latest national survey conducted by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå), the majority of Swedes are very concerned about rising crime in the Nordic country. At the same time, the answers given by the respondents indicate that the country’s population’s trust in law enforcement agencies has decreased over the past year, Nya Dagbladet reports.

53% of Swedes express great concern about crime, up 7% from last year and the highest level in the history of modern Sweden. 74 per cent of those surveyed still say they feel safe when they go out in the evening, but 26 per cent are afraid to do so. Of these, 5 per cent avoid going out alone in the evening at all. Among men, 18 per cent feel insecure, while among women the figure is 34 per cent, writes Nya Dagbladet.

“We do not see any dramatic increase in personal insecurity because someone is afraid to leave the house in the evenings. On the other hand, concern about crime in society has been growing for almost 10 years, and this increase over the last year is particularly significant,” Brå investigator Sanna Wallin said in a press release.

The Swedish population’s trust in the judiciary has declined and now stands at only 49 per cent. But the biggest decline is trust in the police, which has fallen by 5 per cent since last year and now stands at 54 per cent. The survey involved 200,000 people aged 16 to 84. Brå has been conducting it regularly since 2006.
