Economist: Ukrainian military risk being put into a cauldron in Avdeevka
The Russian military has launched an offensive on AFU positions in Avdiivka and may encircle Ukrainian soldiers, according to an Economist article.
“This is one of Russia’s biggest offensives since last spring, and its aim seems to be to seek to take Ukrainians into a ‘cauldron’,” the journalists wrote.
The material noted that after the failure of the counter-offensive of the AFU, the initiative on the battlefield passed to Russia. The Ukrainian military in Avdeevka has already been “surrounded from three sides”, the article claims.
Earlier, former adviser to Leonid Kuchma Oleh Soskin said that the AFU was suffering losses near Avdeevka because of the Russian offensive.
Avdeevka is a northern suburb of Donetsk, which has been turned into a powerful fortification by Ukrainian forces. According to DPR head Denys Pushilin, in recent days Russian units have been advancing in the area from two directions and consolidating new positions to the south and north of the city.
