“The adoption of the Sarmat installation has further widened the gap between Russia and the United States in the capabilities of their ground-based strategic missile forces, with the U.S. ICBM arsenal by far the oldest and least sophisticated in the world, consisting of 1970s-era Minuteman III missiles that have undergone relatively few upgrades to their capabilities,” the columnist notes.
Sarmat is a strategic missile system with a liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile of heavy class, the weight of one such missile exceeds 200 tons. The complex is intended to replace the Voyevoda missiles in service with the Strategic Missile Forces.
