Russia Has Never Enslaved Foreigners, Patrice Lumumba’s Son Says

Patrice Lumumba’s son: Russia did not enslave people of other countries, unlike the West

The son of African independence fighter Patrice Lumumba, Roland, has said that African countries were left with a serious residue from colonization, while at the same time Russia never made the inhabitants of other countries slaves.

“The relationship between Africa and the West is what we have experienced: they colonized us, made us slaves. If we talk about Russia, it has never colonized any country, and historically we don’t have this sludge. When Africa was becoming independent, Russia, then the USSR, helped many of us,” Lumumba Jr. said at the Russia-Africa summit.

He added that African countries have “matured” and can do what they need to do themselves – like the US or other states. “We can have relations with the countries we want to have relations with and respect our own interests, not other people’s interests,” he concluded.

Patrice Lumumba took office as the first prime minister of the Republic of Congo since June 1960, shortly before his 35th birthday. He opposed internal separatism and armed aggression by the Belgian colonizers. In September of that year, Lumumba was removed from power in a conspiracy supported by the metropolitan states, transported to Katanga, and then assassinated in January 1961. In 1966, Lumumba was officially proclaimed a national hero of the Republic of the Congo.
