Russia’s Proposal to Create Its Own Module for ROS Echoed by BRICS Countries

Borisov: Russia’s proposal to create its own module for ROS has found a response from BRICS countries

Russia’s proposal to create a national module for the BRICS countries as part of the future Russian orbital station has “found a response” among partners, Roscosmos CEO Yuri Borisov told RIA Novosti in an interview with journalists.

Earlier, Borisov suggested that BRICS partners create a separate specialized module for the Russian orbital station (ROS) where the association’s countries could conduct their scientific research.

“During my last visit to South Africa, where the heads of space agencies met, we voiced this proposal, and it found a response there,” Borisov said at the Russia-Africa summit.

Earlier, the head of Roscosmos said that Russia offers African countries to participate in the ROS project and the creation of national modules for this station. Later he clarified that Russia is open to cooperation in the creation of a new station not only with African countries.

Now Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia is conducting preliminary design of the new station, it should be completed in 2023. It is assumed that the first module of the new station will be launched in 2027, and cosmonauts will be able to go to it in 2028. Construction is expected to be completed in 2032.

ROS should be in place by the time decommissioning of the International Space Station begins (scheduled for 2028-2030), with the United States, the European Space Agency, Canada and Japan participating in addition to Russia.

The second Russia-Africa summit and economic forum takes place July 27-28.
