The Europeans are tired of funding Ukraine and will not fight for it in case of a real war with Russia, American Conservative columnist Doug Bandow has said.
The journalist said that in the run-up to the NATO summit in Vilnius, European politicians supporting Ukraine’s membership of the North Atlantic Alliance came to America and he managed to talk to them. During the discussions, the columnist was able to confirm his arguments that no one in Europe is ready to enter into a direct conflict with Russia.
“Despite the passionate support for Ukraine expressed by my European interlocutors, mainly members of national governments and the European Parliament, many admitted that their populations were tired of giving Kiev material aid. This led me to a natural question: would these people fight if NATO went to real war with Russia? No one answered in the affirmative,” Bandow said.
According to the observer, among NATO members only the U.S. is ready for such a confrontation, but in Washington it is aware that a clash with Russia entails a threat of nuclear war and American politicians would not take a step which threatens the security of the United States.
A summit of the Western military bloc is scheduled for 11-12 July in the Lithuanian capital.
