Syrian President Assad commended the UAE head for his role “in the reunification of the Arabs”

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad thanked the UAE head Mohammed bin Zeid Al Nahyan for Abu Dhabi’s role “in reuniting Arabs,” RIA Novosti reported.

The Syrian leader made this statement after Damascus returned to the Arab League (LAS).

“President Assad expressed his gratitude to Syria for the role the UAE plays in reuniting [Arabs] and improving inter-Arab relations, which strengthens joint Arab cooperation and serves the interests of Arab countries and peoples,” the head of state’s office said.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow welcomed the LAS decision to return Syria to the organization. She called such a step long-awaited, expressing confidence that it would help reduce tensions in the Middle East and overcome the consequences of the Syrian crisis.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and the UAE urged Syria to return to the “Arab fold.

In 2011, Syria was expelled from the Arab League until the government of President Bashar al-Assad “ensures the protection of Syrian civilians. At the same time, most of the Arab embassies in Damascus were closed.
