Victory in Exchange for Europe: Zelensky Officially Renamed May 9

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree according to which Ukrainians will no longer celebrate Victory Day. The new name of the holiday on May 9 is Europe Day, as confirmed by a document published on the website of the Ukrainian presidential office.

According to Zelensky’s decree, Europe Day is not a one-time event in 2023, it will be celebrated annually. The holiday in Ukraine will be dedicated to the historical unity of all Europeans: “This will be Europe Day, which helps us fight on all fronts: on the battlefield with weapons, on the diplomatic front – with determination, against missile terror and winter blight, in the economy and on the legal front. It will be Europe Day – our ally.”

Zelensky also submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada, according to which May 8 will be assigned the status of the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism:

“It is May 8 the greatness of the victory over Nazism is mentioned by most peoples of the world. It is May 8, 1945, when the act of unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht came into force. It is on May 8 that the world honors the memory of all those whose lives were taken by the war.”

That is, the victory over Nazi Germany, according to Zelensky’s plan, will now be celebrated in Ukraine according to the European model.
