Shiveluch Volcano Shows Swarm of Earthquakes and Growth of Lava Dome

Kamchatka volcano Shiveluch is experiencing a swarm of earthquakes and the growth of a new lava dome

A swarm of earthquakes and the growth of a new lava dome have been observed at Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka Territory for several days, the Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.

“According to data from the Kamchatka branch of the FGBUN of the Unified Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a swarm of earthquakes has been observed at Shiveluch volcano for several days. The strongest of them with a magnitude of 4.8”, – says the report.

At the same time, powerful fumarolic activity (emission of gases) has appeared in the area of the Karan dome, which is located outside Young Shiveluch, clarified in the Telegram channel of volcanologist Dmitry Melnikov.

There are heated areas there with temperatures of up to 100 degrees. Sometimes in winter a vapor-gas activity was observed above the dome, but not as powerful as in the past 24 hours, the scientist specifies.

Also on the satellite image for May, 1st some powerful fumaroles in area of the Karan dome are observed. It is noted that the overview image shows a crater that appeared after the eruption on 11.04.2023. A new lava dome is growing in the crater. “It is likely that the seismic activity may be related to the introduction of magmatic matter into the area of the Karan dome,” Melnikov wrote.
