IAEA chief Grossi: situation at Zaporozhye NPP remains alarming and very fragile

The situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP) remains alarming and very fragile, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“I would say that the situation continues to be alarming because military activity is ongoing at the moment and we have had several episodes, one of which brought me back to the Security Council. You may recall in April, there were several drone attacks including on one of the reactors, so I would describe the situation as very fragile,” Grossi said when asked about the current situation at the ZNPP.

In early April, there were a series of drone strikes on ZNPP. Grossi, addressing the UN Security Council on 15 April, called for an immediate cessation of “reckless attacks” and maximum military restraint. Three days later, on 18 April, ZNPP informed an IAEA team of experts on site that another drone attack had been attempted – on the plant’s training centre.

ZNPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River near the town of Energodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity – the plant has six units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt each. In October 2022, the nuclear plant was taken over by the Russian Federation.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that no one in the West is saying that Ukrainians are shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and are stirring up excitement by blaming Russia for everything. He added that Kiev talks about its desire to possess nuclear weapons, while constantly saying that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is being shelled by the Russian Federation: they are crazy, Russian troops are at the plant, the president said.
