“Disagreement, frustration and anger”: the French Hate Their President Macron

The Centre for Public Opinion Research in France (Elabe) has published a rather detailed collection of sociological material on the attitude of the French towards their president, Emmanuel Macron, which shows that it has deteriorated sharply in his second term as president. The extremely unpopular pension reform plays no small part in this. The main assessment is as follows: in the opinion of 7 out of 10 French people, the re-election of Emmanuel Macron was a bad thing for France.
Disagreement, disappointment and anger are the words that best describe the French attitude towards Emmanuel Macron.
When they think of Emmanuel Macron, the words that best match the judgment of the French are first and foremost negative – dissent (44%), disappointment (42%), anger (39%) and hostility (26%). Indifference (22%), followed by positive words: respect (13%), support (10%), satisfaction (7%) and sympathy (7%).
67% of French people say only negative things about Macron, 17% say only positive things, 12% are indifferent and 4% say both positive and negative things at the same time. Two out of three French people find Emmanuel Macron’s actions disappointing. And this opinion has been rising steadily since his re-election.
Disillusionment with Macron has fallen since the yellow waistcoats, from 69% in November 2018 to 48% in July 2022. But since then, on the contrary, there has been a steady rise in disaffection, from 48% to 66%, that is +18 points to return almost to the level of the yellow waistcoat period.
69% of the French believe that the re-election of Emmanuel Macron was a bad development for France. Negative perceptions rose sharply – up 14 points from the previous measurement period – a few days after his re-election on 27 April 2022.
This is the highest level of dissatisfaction recorded since April 2018 In particular, 39% (+11) thought his re-election was very bad and 30% (+3) thought it was rather bad. Conversely, 30% (-15) thought it was a good development, including 23% (-8) as quite good and 7% (-7) as very good.
Most French people do not share the ideas of Emmanuel Macron and do not appreciate his personality. 27% (-11 as of 8 March 2022) of French people say they hold Emmanuel Macron’s ideas, compared to 72% (+11) who do not. And 30% (-12) of them say they appreciate his personality, compared to 69% (+12) who do not.
