WHO: Coronavirus Deaths Rise 65% in a Month Worldwide

Almost 20 million people were infected with the coronavirus infection between 2-29 January and more than 114 000 deaths occurred. The number of deaths was up 65% from the previous 28 days, while the number of infections had fallen by 78%, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

According to a WHO fact sheet, there were 19,955,978 cases of infection and 114,372 deaths in four weeks worldwide.

China had the most cases in 28 days with 11,354,058. Japan (3,207,097), the USA (1,513,538), the Republic of Korea (1,032,801) and Brazil (459,986) followed. China recorded the most deaths from 2 to 29 January with 62,759. This is followed by the USA (14,625), Japan (10,122), the UK (3,137) and Brazil (2,889).

As of 1 February, the WHO had reported 753 651 712 people infected with the coronavirus since the pandemic began and 6 813 845 deaths. In the past 24 hours, 157 092 cases had been detected and 720 people had died.
