Nearly 80,000 People Rally Against Legal Reform in Tel Aviv

More than 80,000 Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv to protest the government’s plans to reform Israel’s judiciary. This was reported by local newspaper The Jerusalem Post on January 14.

The newspaper said the rally at Habima Square was against the new government of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and its legal reform, which will give the Knesset (Israel’s legislative body) greater control over the judiciary. The Knesset will get the power to overturn Supreme Court decisions on laws and government decisions, as well as to appoint its judges.

“Dan Netanyahu, a cousin of the current prime minister, said at the protest that the government’s judicial reforms resemble Nazi Germany,” The Jerusalem Post wrote.

Organizers of the rally later said they estimated that more than 100,000 Israelis took part in the demonstration under the intermittent rain on Saturday night. The newspaper noted that the protesters sang a song with the words “we came to chase away the darkness, we have light and fire in our hands”.

Israeli police continue to receive reports of protests taking place in several locations across the country.
