Indonesian President Joko Widodo is calling on Western leaders to tone down the rhetoric against Russia at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Bali. This was reported on Sunday by the newspaper Politico, citing its sources.
It is noted that Indonesian officials, including President Widodo, put pressure on their Western counterparts so that they “showed ‘flexibility’ and considered the use of less harsh rhetoric” in relation to Moscow. The newspaper notes that this is necessary so that Russia, represented at the summit by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, agrees to adopt the final resolution.
It stresses that the summit’s final declaration will be seen by Widodo as a “personal success.”
Politico notes that Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil and China do not want to condemn Russia in the summit’s final declaration.
“Beijing will find any criticism of Russia impossible,” Politico stresses.
