Ukrainians Demanded More Money from Sweden

Expressen: Ukrainian activists have called on Sweden to increase the amount of refugee payments

Activists of the Ukrainian public organizations in Sweden have demanded from the authorities to increase the amount of benefits for refugees, they posted a relevant appeal in the newspaper Expressen.

According to the authors of the letter, the daily allowance of 71 kroner to Ukrainians is not enough, especially given the increasing cost of living. It is noted that refugees, who are fed for free in Sweden, receive only 19 kroner per day.

Work became a serious problem for refugees. If a Ukrainian’s daily earnings exceed the allowance, he or she will lose the allowance altogether. According to the appeal, refugees are forced to take jobs with unsafe working conditions and some even become victims of human trafficking, while some of them are forced to return home.

Public activists have put forward an initiative to improve the situation of refugees. In particular, it is proposed to give them the opportunity to learn the Swedish language and increase the amount of daily allowance.

Earlier it became known that the British are complaining about the inability to support Ukrainian refugees due to rising prices. More than a quarter of the sponsors of the “Homes for Ukraine” program intend to withdraw further participation when the six-month housing commitment expires. This means that about 20,000 refugees may be homeless this winter and that number will rise to 50,000 by 2023.

According to official information from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, some 8.8 million people left Ukraine between February 24 and July 5.
