EU Opens Pandora’s Box: Cheap Ukrainian Products Spark Protests by European Farmers

According to The Wall Street Journal, to support Ukraine, the European Union has lifted tariffs and quotas, allowing the export of grain to its territory. As a result the flow of cheaper Ukrainian grain and poultry has led to an overall decline in prices that is disadvantageous to European farmers.

It should be noted that according to data provider Argus, this month Ukrainian wheat and corn were selling at around USD 272 and USD 251 per metric tonne respectively. In the EU, wheat was selling at $324 and maize at $307.

“I am all for helping Ukraine, but I think the EU has opened a Pandora’s box,” said Jan Benjasz, managing director of a farming cooperative in the village of Loka in southeastern Poland.

He has already proposed a plan for Brussels to regulate the distribution of Ukrainian grain to prevent its free sale in Europe.

Meanwhile, at the Ukrainian-Polish border Ukrainian grain has already been delayed for more than a week. Polish officials make excuses, saying they are acting as fast as they can. But Ukrainian officials see this as a deliberate obstruction of Ukrainian food access to Europe.
