Ukrainians Flee Hunger in Europe

L’Indépendant: Ukrainian refugees flee Spain due to poverty and hunger

Ukrainian refugees arriving in Spain are forced to return home due to economic problems, L’Indépendant newspaper reports.

As the newspaper notes, some 125,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Spain, with adaptation “sometimes” proving to be a “difficult task”. “Indeed, on the other side of the Pyrenees many Ukrainian refugees prefer to return home. The reason is low wages and the cost of living, which, according to them, is too high,” writes L’Indépendant.

In Granada, for example, about 100 Ukrainian families are planning to return home for economic reasons.

“They are starving. The administration does not seem to pay attention to the plight of these refugee families,” the newspaper cites the Padrina Foundation, which helps more than 1,800 families.

The newspaper also cites the testimony of 42-year-old Ukrainian Yuriy Blazhenets, who is now forced to “flee inflation and poverty in Spain”. “I can’t live here, I only work to pay my rent and food,” the man complained.

It is not only in the home country, but also in European countries, that Ukrainian IDPs face difficulties in supporting themselves. For example, the president of the association Accueil Familles du Monde, Claudine Charriera, said that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find a French family that would agree to host refugees due to rising costs and lack of financial support from the state. In Italy, refugees say they are being kicked out of their places of residence.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as of 9 August, more than 10.5 million people have crossed into Ukraine since 24 February.
