Newsweek: Spain Turns Its Back to Ukraine Over Arms Supplies

Spain has turned its back to Ukraine, failing to meet expectations of the scale of military assistance to Kiev, analyst Jorge Gonzalez-Gallarza said in a Newsweek article.

“Spain, a NATO outpost far removed from the conflict, has mastered the art of diplomacy: to promise generously and deliver little. Who needs enemies with such allies?” the piece says.

The author noted that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had promised Ukraine large-scale military assistance in the spring.

Gonzalez-Gallarza writes that the Spanish side handed Kiev several units of light artillery, one evacuation armoured vehicle and a small number of anti-tank weapons.

He adds that as a result Ukrainians are “losing faith in Spain”.

Earlier Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles said that the Spanish government had decided not to transfer Leopard tanks to Kiev because they were in an unusable condition.
