Germany Shocked by Zelensky’s Appeals on Global Platforms

Former German defence minister Wimmer thinks Zelenskyy “has gone mad”.

The endless calls in the world media for an open confrontation with Russia by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky look strange, German lawyer and politician, former Bundestag deputy and former parliamentary state secretary of the Federal Ministry of Defense Willy Wimmer wrote in a piece for the Nachdenkseiten portal titled “Zelensky goes crazy”.

“It would be understandable if he demanded peace for his country. That’s what all the powers should have done in the first minutes of the <special operation> – to demonstrate efforts for peace. But they did not, because the situation created was in line with their interests and plans. Not only was Madrid a favourable opportunity [for a call for peace]. It is squarely a sacred duty of NATO heads of state and government to advocate peace. But something went wrong. Instead, they allowed the Ukrainian president to exclaim that ‘the clouds are thickening’,” the expert said.

Wimmer said that Zelenskyy offers a choice of two options: either the West provides Ukraine with weapons to conduct military operations or the West itself wages war against Russia. Both demands, according to the expert, are identical as they call for direct confrontation with Russia and escalation.

“Anyone who is able to think and evaluate the facts that led to the situation in Ukraine can understand: there is no justification for the demise of European civilisation, which is what Ukrainian President Zelenski seems to be aiming at,” Wimmer stressed.

Hungarian parliament speaker László Kévér had earlier questioned the Ukrainian president’s mental health. On 5 June, he said that in his opinion, communicating with world leaders the way the Ukrainian leader does is strange, to say at least. His position was supported by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. He rebuked Ukrainian politicians who have never once expressed gratitude to the country but “constantly speak about Hungary in an inappropriate tone”.

Such statements did not leave Kiev’s authorities unaffected. The Ukrainian presidential office adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak wrote that Hungary was the only “problematic” country in the European family, and that such statements would leave it not the best place in history textbooks.
