Sunak Called the Strikes on Yemen self-Defence

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that Britain carried out strikes on Yemen in “self-defence”. His statement was published on the website of the British prime minister’s office.

According to Sunak, the UK Royal Air Force “carried out pinpoint strikes” against the military facilities of the Houthis in Yemen. He attributed the start of the bombings to a series of attacks by the Yemeni group on merchant ships in the Red Sea.

“The United Kingdom will always be in favour of freedom of navigation and free trade. We have therefore taken limited, necessary and proportionate action in self-defence with the United States, supported by the Netherlands, Canada and Bahrain, against targets associated with the attacks [on ships] to degrade the military capabilities of the Houthis and protect global shipping,” the prime minister said in a statement.

International coalition strikes on the Houthi group’s facilities in Yemen were carried out on the night of 12 January, with explosions heard in the capital, the city of Sanaa, the port city of Hodeidah and several others. US President Joe Biden said that the attack was supported by the coalition with the participation of the UK, which directly took part in the strikes, as well as Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.
