British Man Who Swore at Airport Staff in Dubai Jailed for Three Months

In the capital of the UAE, a court sentenced a British tourist to three months in prison for insulting airport staff. The reason for the swearing was that they did not immediately bring a wheelchair to the mother of the debaucher, writes The Independent.

The man was initially fined Dh10,000 (£2,150), but appealed and his sentence was changed to a jail term on 6 November. The incident took place in February 2022. The court heard that the man then began insulting staff at Dubai International Airport, who told him they “couldn’t bring his mother a wheelchair straight away”. The airport employee complained that the man swore at her when she explained to him that “the wheelchair would be provided before boarding the bus”.

“When I tried to explain this to him, he insulted me with very foul language. I told the tourist that it was forbidden to use such abusive language at Dubai airport, but he replied that he didn’t care.”

The staff member called the police and a case was filed against the man at the Dubai Criminal Court. After serving a prison sentence, the Briton will be immediately deported.

The Independent points out that the UAE is known for its strict laws regarding swearing and offensive behaviour. In October, an American student faced a year in prison for assaulting staff during an argument. In 2017, a British tourist was sentenced to prison for making “obscene gestures” and touching a man’s thigh in a bar.
