DM: PCs of British officials visiting China will be “cleaned” and phones destroyed

The computers of British officials who went to the People’s Republic of China on a visit will be “cleaned” and the disposable phones issued to them will be destroyed to avoid espionage risks, the Daily Mail reported.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly arrived in China on Aug. 30 for an official visit. This is the first visit by a British foreign minister to China in more than five years.

According to the newspaper, Cleverly and other officials had been undergoing training sessions for several weeks before traveling to China. During these events, the officials were told, among other things, that “glamorous women” could be used for theft and blackmail. Members of the delegation were also told not to take their smartphones and laptops with them.

“On return to Britain, the hard drives of any government computers will be removed and purged…. “Disposable” phones have been purchased to be used and then destroyed due to the threat of malware,” the newspaper said in a statement.

It is noted that these recommendations come from the UK’s National Cyber Security Center.
