The Czech Republic to Run into a Scandal with China

The Chinese embassy in the Czech Republic has urged Prague to respect the “one China” principle and not to provoke scandals in relations between the countries. This was reported today, March 2, by TASS citing the STK agency.

Such a reaction from the Chinese diplomatic mission in the Czech Republic followed a meeting of Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky with representatives of the Tibetan community in the country in India on Tuesday, the publication reported.

“China appeals again to the Czech Republic to honour its political commitment to implement the One China policy, stop using China-related issues for political manipulation and avoid creating further scandals and barriers in the development of China-Czech relations,” the agency quoted a spokesman for the Chinese diplomatic mission as saying.

He added that for China, the Indian-based “Tibetan government-in-exile” is an illegal separatist group.

“The PRC strongly opposes any contact of official representatives of any country with this organisation for any reason,” the Chinese embassy spokesman said.

The Czech minister, for his part, said after a meeting with representatives of the Tibetan community in India that he did not see anything objectionable in it as it was a routine event. He said Tibetans appreciated the Czech community’s support for human rights issues and granting autonomy to Tibet within China.

“The human rights situation [in Tibet] is not at all simple. China is currently implementing the same policy in Tibet as in Xinjiang. There is a hard Chineseisation going on there”, Lipavsky said.

Earlier, on 27 February, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said in a video address to the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council that Beijing protested against speculations about human rights violations in the Tibetan and Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous regions of China.
