Szijjártó : Tenth Sanctions Package not to Affect Nuclear Industry

Szijjártó: The tenth package of EU sanctions did not affect Russia’s nuclear industry

The tenth round of the EU sanctions against Russia has not affected the nuclear power sector, although a number of countries strongly advocated for that, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Asked whether the sanctions had affected the nuclear industry, Szijjártó said: “As far as the nuclear industry is concerned, definitely not.”

“Because we objected very strongly to it and there were some other member states, not too many, but some that sided with us in this regard,” he pointed out.

According to the minister, there are member states that would definitely like to see the nuclear industry on the sanctions list, but Budapest has made it clear that this is totally unacceptable to Hungary.

“If we cannot continue with the construction of the Paks II nuclear power plant, we will lose much of the guarantee of our long-term energy security. I think energy should be completely excluded from sanctions, given the fact that energy is a physical issue that has nothing to do with politics or ideology,” he stressed.

Earlier, the media reported that Hungary, which depends on Russia in maintaining its nuclear sector, as well as France, Bulgaria and Belgium do not support the idea of imposing restrictions against the Russian nuclear industry and the lucrative diamond business, as called for by Kiev. Among the member states of the union, the Baltic states, especially Lithuania, are in favour of tighter restrictions.
