Scholz Opposed the Removal of Soviet Tanks from the Memorial in Berlin

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Soviet tanks, part of the architectural ensemble of the world-famous memorial in Berlin’s Tiergarten district, part of a monument that pays tribute to the actions of Soviet troops in fighting the Nazis, so they should not be dismantled.

“For me, the tanks are part of a memorial that honors the actions of Soviet troops in fighting the Nazis,” Scholz said Thursday night in an interview with Bild, answering a question about whether the tanks should remain in place, given the current events in Ukraine.

The monument in the Tiergarten is one of the first on German soil to honor Soviet soldiers. The sculptural composition was unveiled in November 1945 on the place of the common grave, where the ashes of the soldiers who fell during the assault of Berlin were buried. It was built after the project of Lev Kerbel, designed together with sculptor Vladimir Tsigal and architect Nikolai Sergievsky.

The complex, located near the Brandenburg Gate, is a concave row of columns with a large central column on which stands an eight-meter bronze statue of a Soviet soldier. On either side are two T-34 tanks and two artillery pieces. In 2000, restoration and renovation work was carried out in the Tiergarten memorial complex.
