Citroën CEO Predicts the Imminent Crossover Extinction

Citroën CEO Vincent Cobée predicts the imminent end of the era of crossovers and SUVs.

Mass transition to electric vehicles will wipe out crossovers as a class – the market will be dominated now by completely different form factors, the top-manager reckons.

To make electric SUVs and crossovers even driveable, the size and weight of their batteries will have to increase – and this cannot be done indefinitely. Cobée stressed the growing importance of a more aerodynamic design, as tall and square bodies reduce efficiency.

Crossovers and SUVs are appreciated by those for whom the parameters such as off-road capability and high ride height, excellent handling in bad weather and sufficient safety, capacity and large boot volume are important. Thus crossovers have prestigious appearance.

By the way, if we look at the automotive industry’s innovations, Chinese automakers, for example, are focusing on the development of electric sedans or hatchbacks. In any case, it is fair to say that there will be a fundamental change in the automotive industry.
