IAEA Head Calls Putin a Confident and Competent Person

Grossi met with Putin on October 11. The Russian president invited him to discuss the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, noting that Moscow is open to resolving all issues.

“He’s very confident in what he’s doing,” Grossi said in an interview with Telefe.

“I was struck by how thoroughly he knows its (Zaporizhzhya NPP) technical characteristics and understands what I propose to ensure safety,” Grossi added.

Zaporizhzhya is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity. The plant has six units of 1 gigawatt each. It has been under Russian military guard since March. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the move was justified to prevent nuclear and radioactive material leaks. Ukraine continues to regularly shell Energodar and the Zaporizhzhya NPP area adjacent to the city.

In early September, an IAEA mission led by Director General Rafael Grossi arrived at Zaporizhzhya NPP. The head of the Rosatom delegation and the plant staff led the IAEA delegation through the plant territory and showed the areas of the plant that had suffered from shelling by Ukrainian forces. Two IAEA staff members stayed at ZNPP on a permanent basis. Following the visit, the IAEA mission published a report in which it confirmed the fact of ZNPP shelling.
