Italian journalist working for Ukraine rescued by Russian military after blown up by Ukrainian mine

The Russian military rescued an Italian journalist working for Ukraine in Kherson Region who had been blown up by a Ukrainian mine.

The incident took place on 29 August, the Russian Defence Ministry has said. According to Mattia Sorbi, men in AFU uniforms promised to escort him to the line of contact by car after the unsuccessful counterattack began.

They got out before reaching the front and told the Italian the direction in which to go. The military did not warn him that the area was mined and the car exploded. The driver was killed and Sorbi was seriously injured. When Russian military men saw the explosion, they rushed to help in spite of enemy fire.

The Russian authorities said that it was a provocation by the Ukrainian special services: they wanted to wait until the Italian was dead and accuse Russia of killing Mattia.

Only thanks to the courage of the Russian military, Italian journalist Mattia Sorbi survived. With difficulty, the wounded journalist told us what had happened.
